Aqua-Gel

Aqua-Gel is a product designed and formulated to eliminate weed from lakes and rivers. Here is how it works:

In the past, lake weeds could only be sprayed either by surface spraying booms once the weed had grown up to the surface or by submerged spraying booms operated from a boat. Both operations were slow and at times ineffective. Aqua-gel was formulated so that the herbicide could be applied from a helicopter with special designed nozzles to make the operation quicker and more effective. Once applied the Aqua-gel takes the herbicides below the surface of the water and deposits it along the stem of the weed. Aqua-gel contains 1000g/kg of polymeric starch in the form of a water dispersible powder. Where lakes use to take weeks to spray, they can now be done in a matter of hours. Tony Michelle from Amuri helicopters has these unique nozzles and has been spraying NZ lakes for a number of years now.
However Aqua-gel can also be used from a hand held gun or boom. The herbicide is simply mixed with the Aqua-gel and sprayed from the bank. This is now common practice where creeks drains and rivers are being inundated with weeds due to excessive nutrient run off.
